In recent years, non-traditional investments have received increasing attention, especially for defined benefit plans and, to some degree, defined contribution plans.   Alternative investments include real estate, private businesses, commodities, collectibles, hedge funds and the like.  Such investments raise a variety of issues, which will be discussed, including

    • Valuation and reporting issues
    • Prohibited transaction and fiduciary rules
    • Unrelated Business and Debt Financed Income Tax
    • Plan asset regulations
    • Bonding and audit implications
    • Securities laws
